چکیده

In this paper, we consider the use of the recently proposed Intra-Domain Mobility Management Protocol (IDMP) in and generation (3/4G) wireless cellular networks to reduce the latency of intradomain location updates and the mobility signaling traffic. We first present enhancements to basic IDMP that provide fast intra-domain handoffs by using a duration-limited, proactive packet ‘multicasting’ scheme. We quantify the expected buffering requirements of our proposed multicasting scheme for typical 3/4G network characteristics and compare it with alternative IP-based fast handoff solutions. We also present a paging scheme under IDMP that replicates the current cellular paging structure. Our paging mechanism supports generic paging strategies and can significantly reduce the mobility-related IP signaling load.

IDMP-based Fast Handoffs and Paging in IP-based 4G Mobile Networks

In this paper, we consider the use of our recently proposed Intra-Domain Mobility Management Protocol (IDMP) in generation (4G) mobile networks. On evaluating the heterogeneous access technologies, cellular layouts and application characteristics of 4G environments, we realize a need to reduce both the handoff latency and the frequency of mobility-related signaling. We first present IDMP’s fast...

Handoff Mechanisms in Cellular IP: Enhancement into the Indirect Handoff Mechanism

Mobile IP is now the standard for supporting mobility in IP networks. It provides seamless mobility by hiding the change of IP address when a mobile host moves between IP subnets. Nevertheless, Mobile IP is not designed to support fast handoff and seamless mobility in handoff-intensive environments. Several micro-mobility protocols have been proposed to support host mobility with frequent hando...

Autoconfiguration, registration, and mobility management for pervasive computing

In the vision of pervasive computing, users will exchange information and control their environments from anywhere using various wireline/wireless networks and computing devices. We believe that current protocols, such as DHCP, PPP and Mobile IP, we must be enhanced to support pervasive network access. In particular, this paper identifies three fundamental functions: autoconfiguration, registra...

Unique Vulnerabilities and Attacks on Cellular Data Packet Services

As cellular data services and applications are being widely deployed, they become attractive targets for attackers, who could exploit unique vulnerabilities in cellular networks, mobile devices, and the interaction between cellular data networks and the Internet. Furthermore, mobile devices, often times considered to be part of the cellular network’s trusted computing base (TCB), are becoming m...

SIP Paging and Tracking

The paper introduces a new paging technique to track and wake up a mobile node attached to an access point in wireless LAN network after a SIP INVITE message is initiated by a caller. Tracking Agent keeps track of the mobiles’ handoffs between the access points. Paging Agent triggers tracking agent to page the mobile when a SIP INVITE is received for one of its users. Context transfer feature o...
